TechNet Procurement session- presentation and feedback
Posted by: E.Gifford - 02-23-2016, 04:18 PM - Forum: Technicians' Network Meetings - Replies (4)

Thanks to the 85 people that came to the TechNet Procurement event today!

It was really interesting to hear from Stephanie Holmes, Head of Procurement at the University of Sheffield, and to listen to all of the lively discussions and ideas that came up from the group work.

What did everyone think of the event? Did you find out all the answers to your procurement questions? Or was anything missed out?

Post your technician related procurement questions on the forum here and hopefully someone will be able to help!

ps. photos of the event coming soon!

Anybody know of as service engineer who is experienced in Microm kit?

  WORLD AGAR SHORTAGE
Posted by: j.marston - 01-20-2016, 12:01 PM - Forum: General Discussions - Replies (1)

For any labs that use agar, there is a warning in Nature saying there is a possible shortage. Our supplier has recommended to order now whilst they still have some and before the price suddenly rises.

The article can be found on this link

It may come to nothing but just thought it might be informative.

Science Council Employer Champion (University of Exeter)
Posted by: Cresswell1664 - 12-12-2015, 08:55 AM - Forum: Professional Registration - No Replies

The University of Exeter is pleased to announce it is now a Science Council Employer Champion.

Membership and Professional Registration

As an Employer Champion with the Science Council, the University of Exeter is committed to actively promoting and supporting the professional development and recognition of our scientific staff through professional registration, and providing an environment in which registrants are able to uphold their codes of conduct.

How does Professional Registration benefit me?

Professional Registration:
* Formally recognises your previous knowledge and experience.
* Is linked to you individually, and is transferable between roles and organisations.
* It demonstrates your commitment to continued professional development and shows you maintain knowledge by keeping up to date in your field of expertise.
* It is a mutually respected and harmonised level of professional competence and understanding.
* Is visible to potential employers when you add your level after your name on CVs and address blocks.
* Is internationally recognised.

To support your Professional Registration we will:

* Provide resources that support your membership and registration process, such as time, financial support (for initial membership fees) and a mentoring scheme.
* Ensure that you have access to continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities which enable you to achieve and retain professional registration.
* Formally recognise our technical staff who have achieved professional registration.
* Embed professional registration within our recruitment processes, and use of our Technical Staff Structured Development Framework in personal development planning.
* Have clear policies and procedures that give confidence that our staff can raise concerns about situations that may conflict with your professional responsibilities.

  Festival of the Mind
Posted by: j.ashton - 11-18-2015, 10:26 AM - Forum: General Discussions - Replies (1)

Hi all!

Next year the university will be again holding the 'Festival of the Mind' which is basically a showcase event for our research to the public. I have been part of the programme for the last two years showing off the work I do with zebrafish and chick embryos and it is very well received by staff, students and the citizens of Sheffield! Check out the link below!

http://festivalofthemind.group.shef.ac.uk/2016-funding/

They are currently offering to fund a number of projects and I thought this would be a great opportunity for some of us to come up with some ideas and 'Bring them to Life'.

I'm really passionate about Public engagement and think it would be great if we could showcase what we do as technicians and support staff. I believe that playing a role in this would be a great CPD activity too. I don't mind helping to organise something with others but it would be good to get ideas off everyone and maybe take something off the ground, so that we can apply for the funding!
