Technician in HE awards - nominate by 31st March 2017
Posted by: E.Gifford - 03-06-2017, 03:42 PM - Forum: General Discussions - No Replies

Hi everyone!

Have you all seen the technician in HE awards - the 'Papin Prizes' go to technicians working in HE and there are a range of categories recognising the contributions technicians make to  teaching, research, infrastructure, outreach and more.

They need to receive nominations by the 31st of March 2017, and anyone can nominate technicians (academics, staff, alumni and students).

They are done as part of the HE Technicians Summit 2017 on the 31st of May.

Have you seen this new UoS technicians feature?
Posted by: E.Gifford - 01-30-2017, 03:49 PM - Forum: General Discussions - No Replies

Hi everyone,

Have you seen this great new feature from the University of Sheffield?

"Back in November we put a call out asking for stories about how technicians make things happen and we received some great case studies from colleagues across the University.

We've put all of these stories together into a staff feature page which you can find at:

https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/staff/spotlight

Each case study has its own web link so you can easily find and share individual stories.

This week we will be sharing content on Twitter via @sheffunistaff and encourage you to retweet and post your own stories and observations. https://twitter.com/Sheffunistaff

Also this week, John-Paul Ashton, Research Technician and Network Coordinator in Biomedical Science, is taking over @shefunilife, tweeting about his life at the University. Please give him a big welcome.
https://twitter.com/shefunilife

This project is in support of the national campaign technicians make it happen, showcasing how technicians are vital to society; and the commitment of colleagues in Technical Development and Modernisation to ensure recognition and development of the University's technical workforce.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a case study; we've really enjoyed putting this feature together and hope you enjoy reading and sharing the stories."

Registering on the forum - without an .ac.uk email address
Posted by: E.Gifford - 01-18-2017, 11:31 AM - Forum: FAQ's - No Replies

Hi,

We usually only allow people to sign up with their work email addresses (ac.uk) to avoid spammers who also use popular free email addresses like Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail.

If you do not have an ac.uk address but would still like to join the forum please email me at e.gifford@sheffield.ac.uk.

The site has a two stage authentication

  1. Once you have signed up, click the link in the email that was sent to the address you used to sign up.
  2. Then a TechNet moderator has to activate your account (this could take a day or two depending on when a moderator logs in).

SSL/TLS isn't enabled meaning usernames and passwords are passed through clear text and insecure. Passwords could be potentially intercepted.

Email messages are going to junk because site doesn't have SPF records. SPF records are used to let a recipients mailserver verify whether the sender was legitimate.
