Registering on the forum - without an .ac.uk email address
Posted by: E.Gifford - 01-18-2017, 11:31 AM - Forum: FAQ's - No Replies

Hi,

We usually only allow people to sign up with their work email addresses (ac.uk) to avoid spammers who also use popular free email addresses like Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail.

If you do not have an ac.uk address but would still like to join the forum please email me at e.gifford@sheffield.ac.uk.

The site has a two stage authentication

  1. Once you have signed up, click the link in the email that was sent to the address you used to sign up.
  2. Then a TechNet moderator has to activate your account (this could take a day or two depending on when a moderator logs in).

Lightbulb Security / Tune up technicians-network.net

SSL/TLS isn't enabled meaning usernames and passwords are passed through clear text and insecure. Passwords could be potentially intercepted.

Email messages are going to junk because site doesn't have SPF records. SPF records are used to let a recipients mailserver verify whether the sender was legitimate.

If you need any help configuring this please let me know.
Thanks

Posted by: E.Gifford - 12-20-2016, 01:29 PM - Forum: General Discussions - No Replies

Hi everyone  Smile

There's been loads of new articles recently about technicians and the need for sustainable career pathways for technicians in HE:

Nature letter: Forge a clearer path for technical careers

Efficiency Exchange blog: A technician shaped hole in HE

Laboratory News article: Committed to technicians

What do people think? Has anyone seen any other articles about technicians or technical careers that they would like to share?

  UoS Technicians share your story
Posted by: E.Gifford - 11-23-2016, 12:57 PM - Forum: General Discussions - No Replies

Hi all!

Has everyone seen the campaign launched by internal comms here at Sheffield last week?

http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/staff/news/te...e-1.661898

This is to celebrate the Gatsby #TechniciansMakeItHappen campaign and technicians from Sheffield uni.

All you have to do to share your story is write a 150 word profile of yourself and send it, along with a photo of you at work, to internalcommunications@sheffield.ac.uk by 30th November.

They will then create a great staff feature for the website made up of technician stories.

This is a great way to show off our technician talent at Sheffield and raise the profile of technicians throughout the university!

What's the difference between a technician and a technical instructor? HE blog post
Posted by: E.Gifford - 11-07-2016, 10:23 AM - Forum: General Discussions - Replies (1)

Hi all,

Has everyone seen this Academics Anonymous blog post from Friday?

Let's bridge the divide between lecturers and technical instructors

What do people think? Do you agree or disagree with the author?

They also mention the fellowship of the Higher Education Academy scheme as a way for technical staff to develop and get recognition for teaching in HE. This is something that University of Sheffield techs can register for at Sheffield (sign up to one of the Personal Pathway sessions on the LMS).
